Lapsit Exillis

Chivalrous fresco inspired by the Arthurian legends

There was a time when power struggles were determined by fighting to the death. Lapsit Exillis attempts to understand the motivating forces behind the behaviour and attitudes of the past by exploring the Arthurian legends (the knights of the Round Table in particular), their acts of love, their battles of honour and their bloody wars. On stage, a round table at an incline (with an axe-sword embedded in it) alternates between serving as a table or an arena. Battling with this incline, seven actors jump, dance, mime fights, sing, tremble and die while acting out the birth, apotheosis and fall of a very unusual secret society. The atmosphere is emphasised by a sound set and blends throbbing percussion beats with the unsettling beauty of the organ and mediaeval polyphonies sung by the actors.
