La Mort au Bal masqué

Chamber opera by Joachim Brackx

Joachim Brackx’s opera is a masquerade inspired by Ensor that Ingrid von Wantoch Rekowski stages as a zany ball. The residents of a town find themselves at the Dead Rat Ball, benefiting as never before from the masks that hide their greed, dishonesty and hearts of stone… The jubilant gathering of people wiggle their hips and jostle each other like grotesque characters in one of Brueghel’s paintings. Only Death, the sole reveller who is not in disguise, manages to counteract the lies of the cardinal, the judge or the doctor. The singers are crammed into a small space: a triptych brimming with life that, once the shutters are closed again, is rather more evocative of a coffin. The music confers great melancholy on this masquerade, further intensified by the sound of the harmonium, one of Ensor’s favourite instruments.
