Miserere

Inspired by Jan Dismas Zelenka’s Miserere (ZWV57)

This project offers a dramatic interpretation of Psalm 50, Miserere.

While humanity seems irreparably marked by war, Miserere questions the wretchedness of the human condition through the gaze and voice of a “mater dolorosa”, a woman from every age. The show questions the power of music, poetry and dance as a means of speaking out in the face of abjection. Placed in the centre of the space, alone and majestic, a woman, a Pythia, laments and begs for mercy. In turn inspired and appalled, quivering and hopeful, she passes from one state to the next as if possessed by visions, with broken voices passing through her. She takes upon herself the world’s sorrows and tears, reflecting them back to us all so as to transform them.

An initial exploration of the project will be presented at the Théâtre de la Vie during the Festival des mots, des notes on 22, 23 and 24 June (premiere planned in 2024-2025).
